Preparing Your Vacation Home for a Snowy Winter

Give the Gutters a Good Cleaning – Cleaning your gutters is rarely a fun experience but it’s very important to get all of the gunk out before the snow begins to fall. If your gutters are clogged in the spring, water from the melting snow will have no outlet and this can lead to roof damage.

Turn off All Exterior Faucets – If you have hoses or exterior faucets, shut them off to prevent freezing.

Check Your Exterior Doors and Windows – Leaky doors or windows will cause your vacation home to have icy drafts running through them. Check up on these areas to prevent heat loss.

Interior Maintenance Keeps Your Home in Peak Condition

Keep Your Furnace or Heaters Maintained – Your furnace or other heaters are going to get a lot of use in the winter so it’s critical that they are kept running efficiently. Be sure to clean out or replace air filters as needed.

Always Keep an Eye out for Water Damage – Puddles or other standing water inside of the home is rarely a good sign. If you see water around appliances, pipes or faucets, be sure to have the cause repaired as soon as possible.

Don’t Forget These Key Annual Maintenance Tasks

Check the Roof, Foundation and Caulk – Each year you’ll want to check the roof to ensure it’s in great shape, has all of its shingles or tiles and hasn’t suffered any structural damage which can lead to leaks. Inspect the foundation for cracks and any exterior caulk to ensure it’s in good health.

Have the Carpets Professionally Cleaned – If your vacation home is carpeted you’ll want to have the carpets professionally cleaned each year. Throughout the year dust and dirt will grind down to the root of your carpet where a regular vacuum just can’t get at it.

Maintain Your Safety Equipment – Each year you’ll want to replace the batteries in all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and have your fire extinguishers inspected.

If You’re Not Around, Consider a Property Manager

Of course, if you aren’t planning on being around your vacation home too often you might find that you simply don’t have time to complete the various maintenance tasks required to keep it in great shape.
